Slippery Roads Yikes!

When winter snow storms surprise us, we remember that the roads are slippery as the tires slide approaching a stop sign. The addition of anti-lock brakes usually help and can save us from an accident. On the other hand, we know slowing down and having good tires on our vehicles are the best bet. But what else could we do?

If we are driving a standard transmission, we have already applied the clutch as we slow down. As we continue coming to a stop, we often keep the clutch pedal down as we come to a halt. On slippery road conditions, this action prevents the drives wheels from “pushing” our car forward, allowing us to stop quicker.

We can apply this same action with an automatic. “Carefully,” shift the transmission into neutral to disengage the drive wheels from moving your car forward. CAUTION: YOU MUST NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSION.

I use this method every time I come down our steep driveway when conditions warrant. This method allows me to better control our car as I prep to enter the highway.

Use the above information with some common sense, and you will be happy with the results.
